The Dutch women’s hockey team made an excellent start to the Olympic Games in Paris on Saturday night. After a goalless first quarter, the women ran out to a comfortable 6-2 victory over France. France could only keep up with the Netherlands for a short while. After the first quarter it was still 0-0, but then Frédérique Matla broke the spell for the Dutch women. After that the team was loose and ran out to a big score.

Yibbi Jansen was the star of the show for the Dutch team, with four goals. Three of them came from a penalty corner. Xan de Waard from Renkum did not score, but made two attempts that were undone by the French keeper. Sanne Koolen from Nijmegen also played in the first Olympic duel, but like De Waard she did not score. Next Monday the Orange women will play against Germany. After that group matches against China, Belgium and Japan will follow.

Not only in the double sculls was the Netherlands successful in rowing on Saturday, also in the double four it went well. Koen Metsemakers of Phocas from Nijmegen rowed with Tone Wieten, Finn Florijn and Lennart van Lierop to the best time: 5.41.69. The four were thus considerably faster than the competitors from Italy. Metsemakers, Wieten, Florijn and Van Lierop have now secured a place in the final on Wednesday.

Broenink to semi-finals

Rower Stef Broenink from Apeldoorn made an excellent impression on the first day of the Olympic rowing tournament. Together with Melvin Twellaar, Broenink reached the semi-finals in the double sculls by finishing in a time of 6.14.13. With that time they were indeed slower than Philip Doyle and Daire Lynch (6.13.24) from Ireland, but also more than two seconds faster than their competitors from Spain (6.16.17) and New Zealand (6.16.41).
